Pastisio

1 lb of ground beef
4 1/2 cup grated Romano cheese, divided in half
1 1/2 pounds macaroni
1 Tbsp tomato paste
2 cloves garlic, minced
1/2 pound butter, melted
1 cup onions, chopped
1/4 tsp allspice
1 1/2 quarts milk
1 egg
2 Tbsp cornstarch

Meat Filling

Brown the ground beef with onions, garlic, allspice, tomato paste and a teaspoon of butter. Drain excess fat as you cook.

Pasta:

Cook macaroni in boiling, salted water. Cook until until half done. Drain.

Line a 9 by 15" pan with half of the macaroni. Evenly pour half of the hot melted butter over pasta and sprinkle with 2 cups of cheese. Spread the meat filling over the cheese. Add remaining macaroni, hot butter and 2 cups of cheese.

Cream Sauce

In a large saucepan, beat egg until well mixed. Dissolve cornstarch in a small amount of milk and then add to the egg along with the rest of the milk. Heat to warm, stirring constantly. Add the remaining 1/2 cup of cheese and stir until melted.

Pour cream sauce evenly over macaroni. Bake at 425 degrees for 15 minutes, then reduce heat to 350 and bake for 45 minutes.

Cool slightly and cut into squares for serving.
