This recipe has been a favorite in my family since before I was born. The well-worn magazine clipping I have has a date, written by my mother, of December 17, 1956. The original recipe was the winner of the Pillsbury 4th Grand National Recipe and Baking Contest. The winning baker was Lois Elaine Devitt. The competition was held in 1953.
Sift together:
2 1/4 cups unsifted flour
1 cup confectioners sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
Cut in:
1/2 cup soft butter
1/2 cup other shortening
Mixture should resemble course meal.
Beat 1 egg
Sprinkle 2 Tbsp of beaten egg and 2 teaspoons of vanilla into dough.
Blend well and form into a ball. (Dough may be chilled.)
Roll the dough, to a 1/2 inch thickness, on a flour covered board.
Using your favorite cookie cutters, cut into shapes. Place on ungreased baking sheet. Brush with remaining egg and decorate with sprinkles.
Bake in a 400 degree oven for 5 of 10 minutes. Watch closely so cookies do not burn.
